Thailand, Malaysia or Bali with Kids? A Practical Comparison for Families

Three destinations Arab travellers love, but travelling with children changes the maths: flight hours, paperwork, halal food and getting around with a stroller. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose with confidence.

In short: Malaysia is usually the easiest with young children: halal food everywhere, no advance visa for Egyptian, GCC and Jordanian citizens, orderly cities, and the lowest budgets in our plans. Thailand has the most beaches and activities and suits older children, with a 30-day exemption for GCC citizens and an advance e-Visa for Egyptians. Bali is the most beautiful for nature and resorts, but has the longest flights and needs a car and driver; it suits calm families in the dry season, April to October.

Frequently asked questions

Which is easiest with young children: Thailand, Malaysia or Bali?

Usually Malaysia: halal food is everywhere, the cities are orderly and easy with a stroller, and Egyptian, GCC and Jordanian citizens need no advance visa, just the free MDAC card.

Which of the three is cheapest for a family?

In our 7-day plans, Malaysia is cheapest at about USD 550 to 1,300 for two at budget level, then Bali at about USD 650 to 1,250, then Thailand at about USD 800 to 1,700, excluding international flights. Prices are estimates.

Which destination is best for the summer holidays?

Bali, in its dry season from April to October; Kuala Lumpur with the highlands; and Koh Samui in Thailand. Phuket and Krabi are in their rainy season in summer.

Do children need digital arrival cards?

Yes. Thailand's TDAC, Malaysia's MDAC and the All Indonesia card for Bali are required for every traveller, children and babies included, and all are free on the official sites.

Can we combine two countries in one trip?

Yes. Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok is about a two-hour flight, which suits a 10- to 14-day trip. With young children we prefer one country with two bases so the travelling doesn't tire them.
