Converting the budget to AED and EGP
- UAE dirham: pegged to the dollar at about AED 3.67. For example, a comfort-level week for a couple (USD 1,300 to 2,300) is about AED 4,800 to 8,450.
- Egyptian pound: about EGP 55 to the dollar, according to Pound Sterling Live (23 October 2026), and the rate moves quickly. The same budget is about EGP 71,500 to 126,500.
- When paying by card in Malaysia, always choose to pay in ringgit; converting to your home currency at the till is usually more expensive.
How to save without losing the fun
- Pick the right season: Langkawi and Penang are at their best from December to April, and Langkawi's rainy season starts in September and can run into early December. See the month-by-month guide.
- For families, a serviced apartment with a kitchen in Kuala Lumpur saves a lot on food; see the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur for families.
- Eat at food courts and local halal restaurants; they're tastier and far cheaper than hotel restaurants.
- Book domestic flights early, and watch baggage fees on low-cost airlines, which can double the fare.
- Buy attraction tickets online where possible; Genting's glass-floor cabin, for example, is cheaper booked ahead.
- Check your holiday dates with the Holiday planner 2027, as Eid prices are clearly higher.
