When to visit Phuket
The best time is November to April: calm sea, clear skies and regular boat trips. May to October is the Andaman monsoon season, with more rain and waves and some island trips cancelled, but prices fall a lot. In those months Koh Samui is the better beach choice.
Where to stay in Phuket
| Area | Best for | Pros and cons |
|---|---|---|
| Kata and Kata Noi | Families and couples | A lovely swimming beach and a calm feel with restaurants nearby. A great balance for a first visit. |
| Karon | Families on a mid-range budget | A long, wide beach and many hotels. Quieter in the evening. |
| Bang Tao and Laguna | Families and resort lovers | A cluster of calm upscale resorts on a long beach. You need a car or transfers to go out. |
| Kamala | Couples and peace | A quiet bay close to Patong without its noise. |
| Patong | Nightlife lovers | The busiest and loudest area; not one we recommend for families or anyone after peace. |
| Mai Khao | Total calm | A long, almost empty beach near the airport. Far from the activities. |

Halal food
Phuket has a large Muslim community and halal restaurants in most tourist areas, especially seafood and southern Thai dishes. Look for the halal logo and ask about restaurants near your hotel. Our trip planner suggests restaurants close to where you stay.
Getting around
The airport is in the north of the island, 45 minutes to an hour from Kata or Karon. Public transport isn't convenient, so we recommend a fixed-price private transfer from the airport and Grab or Bolt for getting around the island.
