Bangkok at a glance

Bangkok is Thailand's capital and main gateway. Most flights from the Gulf and Egypt land at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), and some budget flights use Don Mueang (DMK). The city suits three or four nights at the start or end of a trip, before heading to the sea in Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui.

Best time to visit

November to February is cooler and less humid: the best and busiest season. March to May is very hot, and June to October is the rainy season, usually heavy afternoon showers, with lower hotel prices.

What to do in Bangkok

Halal food in Bangkok

Soi Arab, on Sukhumvit Soi 3 and 3/1 near Nana station, has many Arab, Egyptian and Lebanese restaurants, among the best known Nasir Al-Masri. Halal food stalls are also common in the food courts of the big malls. Look for Thailand's green halal logo and check recent reviews on the map. More tips in our halal food in Thailand guide.

Getting around

The BTS Skytrain and MRT are the fastest way to beat the traffic. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Bolt are available and safe. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs to the centre, or book a fixed-price private transfer if you travel with family and luggage.

How many nights do you need?

Three nights suit most travellers: a day for the historic sights and the river, a day for shopping, and a day for the children or Chatuchak market. Then fly on to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui.
